Our story begins with the culinary genius of Chef Tuncay, whose passion for cooking infuses every dish served at Lucca. Hailing from Kars, Turkey, Tuncay’s culinary journey ignited in the sun-drenched coastal town of Alanya, where he perfected his craft. Throughout the years, his talent took him around the globe, competing in esteemed culinary competitions in cities like Moscow, Berlin, and New York. It was here that he earned prestigious accolades and gold medals, showcasing his remarkable skills and dedication to the culinary arts.
Twelve years ago, Tuncay brought his expertise to New Zealand, where he ran a popular kebab shop in Katikati for over a decade. Despite his semi-retirement, the call of the kitchen was too strong to resist. Thus, he opened the doors of Lucca in Waihi Beach, eager to share his culinary passion with the community. Each dish on our menu reflects Tuncay’s decades of experience, crafted with care and an unwavering commitment to quality. While Tuncay masters the kitchen, the front-of-house comes to life through the efforts of his son, Yusuf. At just 19, Yusuf infuses Lucca with youthful energy and a fresh perspective, ensuring every guest feels like part of the family. His journey in hospitality began at the tender age of 12, assisting at his father’s kebab shop, where he learned the importance of hard work and dedication. With every interaction, he cultivates a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes guests feel at home.
Yusuf’s passion extends beyond hospitality; after studying IT for a year, he recognizes the potential for technology to enhance the restaurant experience. His love for innovation drives him to develop our website and integrate tech solutions that improve daily operations. Yusuf understands that a seamless experience begins even before guests step through the door. While he spends his days ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and well cared for, he is also training for his pilot license, balancing his aviation ambitions with the daily operations of Lucca.
This year, Lucca was invited to Waihi College, where we had the opportunity to demonstrate the art of pasta cooking to eager students. This event not only allowed us to share our love for Italian cuisine but also to connect with the local community in a meaningful way. The students were engaged and enthusiastic, asking questions and participating in the cooking process. It was a wonderful experience that strengthened our ties to the community and highlighted the importance of culinary education. We cherish these moments of connection, knowing that they help inspire the next generation of chefs and food lovers.
